Key Competition Carnivals

The following carnivals are target carnivals for all North Bondi Nippers competitors:

  • Waverley Shield: Tentatively scheduled for 20 November 2016 at Bondi Beach
  • Sydney Branch Championships: Usually held in February – Held at Maroubra Beach for the past 2 years
  • NSW State Championships: Friday 3 – Sunday 5 March 2017 at Swansea

In addition to the above, there are several other carnivals throughout the season that North Bondi Nippers attend as a club. All information regarding these carnivals will be forwarded by Age Managers.

Registrations for carnivals is co-ordinated by Alex Joseph (nipperscompetition@northbondisurfclub.com). North Bondi SLSC pays the registration fees for competitors at these carnivals (if registrations are made by the relevant cut-off date for the carnival). All Nippers that commit to a carnival are expected to attend, otherwise registration fees will be required to be reimbursed.

Competition and Carnival Selection

The Selection Committee is ultimately responsible for selecting teams to represent the North Bondi SLSC at Sydney Branch, NSW State Championships and other carnivals.

Teams will be selected with input from age managers and coaches and will be primarily based on a Nipper’s performance throughout the season with an emphasis on training and carnival results.

The Selection Committee will also take into account recent form and subjective elements such as the conditions and performances on the day as well as possible event clashes.

In some cases team selections may involve race-offs.

Beach Training

Drew Richardson is responsible for beach training.

Andrew McGill and Mick Lopes will offer beach sprint and relay training throughout the season on Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 6.30 am. Further details will be available in October.

Nippers Training

Learning to paddle nipper boards will take place during Sunday nippers with your Age Managers throughout the season.

There are also various school holiday and term programs run by outside groups where children can learn to master their skills in the surf on a more structured basis.

Last season, “Let’s Go Surfing” held successful programs for North Bondi Nippers, focusing on board and ocean swimming skills. These programs are perfect for those Nippers who want to improve surf and board skills without committing to Nippers as their summer sport. Dates and times for upcoming programs will be released as soon as they are finalised.

Competition Squad

Sunday Nippers focuses on developing Surf Lifesaving and other important skills. The Competition squad is a program designed to build competitive racing skills for those children who want to commit to Nippers as their summer sport.

All Age Managers will contact Jim Walker should they believe one of their Nippers is capable of joining the Competition Squad.

All Nippers who participate in training with the Competition Squad must commit to attending a set number of training sessions per week and attend 6 carnivals per season plus NSW State Championships. These are compulsive requirements of being a member of the Competition Squad.

In order to enable North Bondi Nippers Competitors to compete at carnivals, parents of all Competition Squad members are required to contribute to supporting the Competition Squad in some way, either as Water Safety or as a Carnival Official. We understand this is a significant commitment for the family. However, North Bondi Nippers are unable to compete in carnivals without the help of all competitor families

For Nippers who are interested in joining the North Bondi Competition squad, please read the information in the below link:

Unfortunately, due to limited resources, places in the Competition Squad are limited. Please note that a Nipper must submit the Expression of Interest form and cannot attend Competition Training until they have been accepted as a member of the Competition Squad.

Should your Nipper be interested in competition training but you are a bit uncertain, our best advice is to spend as much time as possible at the beach, invest in some surf lessons for your child or enrol in one of the “Let’s Go Surfing” camps.

Once the season commences, the Competition Squad coaches and team selectors will be assessing all age group regularly. They will identify Nippers who have the potential to join the Competition Squad.
