NIPPERS

Nippers is the Junior Branch of Australian Surf Life Saving working to develop competent and confident future generations of lifesavers on our beaches. Nippers is about fun, friendship and surf safety, whilst instilling courage, resilience, teamwork, and community-mindedness!

At North Bondi, children 5-14 year-olds learn about the many aspects of surf life saving by participating in age group activities both in and out of the water. Along with fun physical skills such as swimming, board paddling, shallow wading, beach running, and flags; Nippers also develop a solid understanding of Surf Life Saving – from the foundations of the ocean and surf environments, through CPR, basic first aid, and responding to a rescue.

Our North Bondi Nippers is fun for the entire family! Through this junior program, both children and parents attain vital surf lifesaving skills, and become an integral part of this great and valuable community.

Nippers is not a learn to swim program. We strongly encourage all nippers to participate in an external professional swimming program.  Your child will be safer in the ocean and progress more quickly if they are a confident swimmer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Nippers is held at North Bondi SLSC on Sunday mornings and runs from early October through to March.

The North Bondi Nippers program includes lessons that are tailored to each of the nipper age groups, ensuring the content is relevant, in line with lifesaving and surf sports most up to date training standards. But most of all, Nippers is about FUN!

All children are encouraged to “have a go” at activities, but no one is forced to participate in any activity that they are not comfortable with or don’t want to do.

Beginning with the basics of ocean and beach awareness, surf education is gradually introduced to the children each year with the objective that at the age of 13 they can obtain their Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC), enabling them to to start patrolling our beach.

Nippers activities is not a child-minding service. At Sunday Nippers a parent / guardian must be present on the beach at all times.

Nippers is not a learn to swim program. We strongly encourage all nippers to participate in an external professional swimming program.  Your child will be safer in the ocean and progress more quickly if they are a confident swimmer.
